They have three accepted size categories with two unofficial divisions. The terms Royal Standard and Teacup are commonly used by breeders as a way to sell puppies that are either excessively large or incredibly small. While both of these types of dogs are desirable, purposely breeding them to these extremes presents them with extenuating health concerns.
By the definitions put in place by the American Kennel Club, a dog is considered as a Toy if it reaches less than 10" of height at their shoulder. If they exceed 15" at this same point, they are put into the Standard classification. The middle group, which is quite popular as family pets, is called Miniature.
Certain grooming cuts are instantly recognizable as belonging to this particular breed. When the fur is sheered rather short everywhere but the top of the head, and a puff at the end of a puppy's tail, the look is called the Lamb Clip. It is the Continental or English Saddle styles, featuring shaved rears with fluffy heads, chests, hips, ears, ankles and tails that are most synonymous with these dogs.
While undeniably beautiful with their narrow snouts, dark, oval-shaped eyes, long ears, high tail and alert stance, it is their personality traits that make them great pets.
